In 1938 he only finished seventh at the Ysaye music competition in Brussels but a year later the 19-year-old took first place at the competition in Geneva. At the time jury member Alfred Cortot spoke of a ””new Liszt””. Benedetti Michelangeli’s world career began immediately after the end of the Second World War with his debut in London in 1946. He was soon touring the world with his own grand piano from the small Italian manufacture Tallone and his personal piano technician. The solo piano recordings of this exclusive 10-CD box were also made on this instrument. They date from the years 1949 to 1987 and present the essence of his supreme skill with works by Debussy Chopin Ravel Liszt Scarlatti Schumann Schubert as well as by Baldassarre Galuppi Muzio Clementi and Florido Tomeoni. He was impressed by Mexico’s willingness to help many of his Polish compatriots fleeing the German occupiers. From his violin collection worth many millions he later gave away a Stradivarius and a Guarneri to Mexico and to Israel. During World War II Szeryng was a liaison officer and interpreter of the exiled Polish prime minister Sikorski who had found asylum in France. His career as a violin virtuoso began with studies with Flesch in Berlin and Boulanger in Paris and a performance of Beethoven’s Concerto op. 61 under Bruno Walter in Warsaw. It took him to all the music capitals of the world and ended abruptly with his unexpected death in Kassel in 1988. The recordings of piano concertos by Rachmaninov （in C minor） Prokoviev （in G major） and Schumann that were made in 1958 are still regarded as true highlights of recording history. They are included along with other outstanding examples of his art in this collection of original albums. Among all these legendary recordings that represent all the high points of the Richter discography are Mussorgsky’s ””Pictures at an Exhibition””. This 1958 recording of a live performance in Bulgaria is one of the most quoted benchmark versions of what is probably the composer’s most famous work. From the series of recordings made in Russia those of the first two Rachmaninov concertos under Kurt Sanderling （1955 and 1959） are particularly noteworthy.
