Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921) is a metatheatrical drama by Luigi Pirandello. Viewed as an important work of absurdist literature, the play was a critical failure when it was first staged in Rome. Revised by its author and bolstered by successful performances in New York City, Six Characters in Search of an Author has been recognized as a pioneering examination of the nature of creativity, the relationship of the director and actors to the work of art, and the psychological stress associated with staging a theatrical production. While preparing to rehearse a new play by director Luigi Pirandello, a theatre company is interrupted with the arrival of six strangers on set. After a moment of frustration and confusion, the director is told that they are six unfinished characters whose story cannot be told without his intervention. The Father, Mother, Son, Stepdaughter, Boy, and Child refuse to leave, forcing the director to convince his actors to help them fulfill their wish. As the story begins to take shape, the characters exert more and more control over the set and the participation of the other actors, soon overtaking the director entirely. Strange and compelling, Six Characters in Search of an Author is a unique play which saw resistance from critics and theatergoers for one reason only: its methods forced them to question the nature of reality itself. This edition of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author is a classic work of Italian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Collected Poems and Prose of Jupiter Hammon compiles the works of Jupiter Hammon, America’s first published black writer. When his poem “An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ, with Penitential Cries” appeared in print as a broadside in 1761, Hammon unknowingly changed American literature for generations to come. Born into slavery, Hammon was a highly talented poet and preacher whose subtle criticism of slavery employed Christian symbolism and promoted a vision of salvation through determination and faith in God. In 1786, Hammon gave “An Address to the Negroes in the State of New York” at the inaugural assembly of the African Society of New York City. In it, he proclaimed that “If we should ever get to Heaven, we shall find nobody to reproach us for being black, or for being slaves.” His message of hope and spiritual uplift employed Christian theology while responding to the needs and desires of enslaved African Americans. In “An Address to Miss Phillis Wheatley,” Hammon harnesses the communicative power of poetry to acknowledge and praise a pioneering young poet: “While thousands muse with earthly toys; / And range about the street, / Dear Phillis, seek for heaven’s joys, / Where we do hope to meet.” Through this shared passion for poetry and belief in life after death, the two poetsーwho never did meet in lifeーjoin in mind and in spirit despite their earthly status as slaves. Through humility and hope, Hammon expresses his solidarity with a kindred soul while igniting and inspiring countless others. This edition of The Collected Poems and Prose of Jupiter Hammon is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
What Every Woman Knows (1908) is a play by J. M. Barrie. It ran for 384 performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and was produced on Broadway as well, making it one of the most successful plays of the year. Inspired by the women’s suffrage movement, Barrie sought to explore the intersection of gender and class in Scottish aristocratic society. Adapted numerous times for film and consistently revived on stage, What Every Woman Knows is an enduring work of English theatre by an author whose reputation as the creator of Peter Pan has largely overshadowed the rest of his brilliant career. Behind every great man, an even better woman makes his success possible. In J. M. Barrie’s masterful play, a Scottish family worried for their daughter’s future seizes the chance to marry her off to a promising young man. Having discovered a young university student in their vast library, they offer to pay for his education if he agrees to take Maggie’s hand. Left with no real choice in the matter, John Shand marries into the Wylie family and attempts to launch a career in politics. As his reputation growsーdue in no small part to his wife’s hard workーShand begins to forget his impoverished roots, dreaming instead of a future all his own. Funny and deeply critical of the institution of marriage, What Every Woman Knows is a story of romance, ambition, and humility from a legendarily gifted Scottish storyteller. Barrie’s What Every Woman Knows is a classic work of Scottish literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Melting Pot (1908) is a play by Israel Zangwill. Raised in London by parents from Latvia and Poland, Zangwill understood the plight of the city’s Jewish community firsthand. Having risen through poverty to become an educator and author, he dedicated his career to the voiceless, the oppressed, and the needy, advocating for their rights and bearing witness to their suffering in some of the most powerful novels and stories of the Victorian era. When it was staged in Washington, DC, The Melting Pot received praise from President Theodore Roosevelt, who proclaimed from the audience “That's a great play, Mr. Zangwill!” During the 1903 Chi?in?u pogrom, David Quixano lost his entire family to antisemitic violence. Unable to remain in Russia, he emigrates to the United States, where he hopes to be accepted not just into the nation’s growing Jewish community, but into its open democratic society. When he arrives, he composes a successful symphony called “The Crucible,” written in tribute to the melting pot of American culture, its promise to rise above ethnic divisions. He soon meets a fellow immigrant named Vera, who hails from a Christian family in Russia. As he begins to fulfill his own American Dream, a shocking revelation forces David to question his unwavering idealism. The Melting Pot ran for over one hundred performances in New York City, starring some of the leading actors of its time and galvanizing the image of the immigrant experience in America for generations to come.
The Princess (1847) is a poem by British poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Written before Tennyson was named Poet Laureate, the poem addresses accusations from critics that the poet refused to write on serious subjects, as well as the founding of Queen’s College, London, the first college for women in Britain. Despite its comedic tone and somewhat critical outlook, the poem is seen as an important early work dedicated to exploring the concerns of the burgeoning feminist movement.

Unable to find the princess Ida, a young prince seeks the council of her father, King Gama, in order to locate his young fianc?e. The king tells him that Ida has fled to a distant retreat, where she has founded a university for women and forsaken the ways of men. Joined by his friends Cyril and Florian, the prince disguises himself as a woman and journeys in search of Ida. The three enroll as students at her university, learning its lessons and absorbing its goals for equality between men and women. As the prince grows close to Ida, he struggles to hide his true identity from her, and is eventually forced to flee. Captured, he is held by the princess while King Gama and his father threaten to go to war over his release. As Ida prepares for battle, the prince and Florian manage to escape, returning home to prepare for conflict with Ida and her brothers. The Princess is a serio-comic poem which dramatizes the goals of the early feminist movement while examining the institution of marriage and the highly gendered nature of education and opportunity in Britain.

This edition of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Princess is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
“The first taste I had for books came to me from my pleasure in the fables of the Metamorphoses of Ovid. For at about seven or eight years of age I would steal away from any other pleasure to read them, inasmuch as this language was my mother tongue, and it was the easiest book I knew and the best suited by its content to my tender age.” ?Michel de Montaigne

Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love (2 AD) is an instructional poem by Ovid. Divided into three books, Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love was immensely popularーif a little controversialーin its time, and has survived numerous charges of indecency over the centuries. For the modern reader, it should prove a surprisingly relatable work on intimacy from an author of the ancient world. Although it has been argued that the publication of this work led to Ovid’s exile in 8 AD, it remains unlikely that the poet was banished for anything other than political reasons having to do with succession.

At times serious, at others humorous, Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love uses a mix of down-to-earth examples and relatable references to mythology in order to offer salient advice for the reader longing for love. Far from a valuable artifact of classical literatureーwhich it is, in partーOvid’s work is a wonderfully straightforward textbook on all aspects of human relationships. Topics include etiquette, remembering birthdays, avoiding unhealthy jealousy, being open to older and younger lovers, and nurturing honesty. On sex, Ovid suggests a careful selection of positions according to comfort and physique, ultimately recommending that love-making be done in a way that pleasures all parties involved. Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love, although frequently tongue-in-cheek, is an earnest and effective attempt to enlighten and encourage its readers to partakeーresponsiblyーin one of life’s greatest pleasures.

This edition of Ovid’s Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love is a classic work of Roman literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Love Songs (1917) is a poetry collection by Sara Teasdale. The poet’s fourth collection, for which she was awarded the 1918 Pulitzer Prize, is a masterful collection of lyric poems meditating on life, romance, and the natural world. Somber and celebratory, symbolic and grounded in experience, Love Songs revels in the mystery of existence itself. From despair to elation, confusion to security, Sara Teasdale captures the many emotions at work in the hearts of lovers. In “November,” she explores the strange feeling that accompany a relationship nearing a mutual ending: “The world is tired, the year is old, / The fading leaves are glad to die, / The wind goes shivering with cold / Where the brown reeds are dry.” Beginning her brief verse with an observation of autumn, Teasdale moves into a bittersweet stanza on love grown stagnant, mirroring the world approaching winter: “Our love is dying like the grass, / And we who kissed grow coldly kind, / Half glad to see our old love pass / Like leaves along the wind.” So far from spring, the only thing certain is that these lovers must part ways. Refusing to romanticize love, to portray it as wholly positive or negative, the poet crafts a timeless collection on a timeless theme. For Teasdale, a poet who merges an abiding affection for flora and fauna with a critical distance from human affairs, the belief in the life of the world, with or without us, is enough.
Men, Women, and Ghosts (1916) is a poetry collection by Amy Lowell. Published at the beginning of her career as an influential imagist devoted to classical poetic themes and forms, Men, Women, and Ghosts is an agile and promising work from a pioneering poet of the early twentieth century. In “Patterns,” the collection’s opening poem, Lowell displays an economy of language and clarity of vision that would define the imagist school, in which she would prove an essential figure: “I walk down garden paths, / And all the daffodils / Are blowing, and the bright blue squills. / […] / I too am a rare / Pattern. As I wander down / The garden paths.” As the speaker of the poem laments the loss of her lover, she remarks: “the man who should loose me is dead, / Fighting with the Duke in Flanders, / In a pattern called a war. / Christ! What are patterns for?” As a poet indebted to tradition and yet interested in the prospect of a modern poetry, as a lesbian and bohemian figure from a prominent Boston family, Lowell was keenly aware of the dangers inherent to “patterns.” Her poems, unique and experimental, are an essential contribution to one of humanity’s oldest art forms. Men, Women, and Ghosts is a vibrant collection from an emerging poet who would come to define the imagist movement throughout her storied career.
When young Christy Mahon flees from his family’s farm and tells the townspeople he killed his father, they respond in a way he did not expect. After an intense fight with his father, young Christy Mahon flees from his family’s farm to tell the townspeople what he had done. When Christy claims that he killed his own father, the townspeople are surprisingly more interested in the story rather than condemning his immoral actions. Reluctantly, Christy recounts the story of the disagreement that eventually led to Christy hitting his father in the head with a heavy farming tool. The townspeople are transfixed, and deem Christy to be a bold and impressive man. As continues with his story, Christy captures the attention of a beautiful barmaid named Pegeen. Though Pegeen is betrothed to another man, she begins flirting with Christy, who appreciates the attention. However, amid the town’s celebration of Christy’s bold act, a surprise visitor comes into town, and is not as enchanted by Christy’s actions as the others. Angry and hurt, the visitor challenges Christy’s actions, risking his newfound position of a celebrated figure, and forcing Christy to desperate measures. Separated into three acts, John Millington Synge’s play, The Playboy of the Western World, examines the human tendency to worship the sensationalized without regard to morals. When The Playboy of the Western World first premiered in the famed Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland in 1907, it elicited an extreme reaction from its audience. Scandalized and enraged by the portrayal of the townspeople, riots broke out. Critics also detested the work, feeling just as insulted as the other Irish people. Despite the outrage of its initial release, The Playboy of the Western World is now considered John Millington Synge’s masterpiece, and is celebrated for its lyrical beauty. The play has also since been adapted into a musical and film, serving as a testament to the play’s genius and compelling content.

This edition of The Playboy of the Western World by John Millington Synge is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a new, eye-catching cover design.
Flame and Shadow (1920) is a poetry collection by Sara Teasdale. The poet’s fifth collection, published two years after she won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize, is a masterful collection of lyric poems meditating on life, death, and the natural world. Somber and celebratory, symbolic and grounded in experience, Flame and Shadow revels in the mystery of existence itself. “What do I care, in the dreams and the languor of spring, / That my songs do not show me at all?” Content to depict the rhythms of nature, the songs of birds, and “the silver light after a storm,” Teasdale’s poetry dissolves the poet’s ego in order to access a deeper well of creative energy: “For my mind is proud and strong enough to be silent, / It is my heart that makes my songs, not I.” In “There Will Come Soft Rains,” a poem born from a decade of war and widespread disease, Teasdale imagines a posthuman world where beauty and harmony continue despite our disappearance: “Robins will wear their feathery fire / Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war…” For Teasdale, a poet who merges an abiding affection for flora and fauna with a critical distance from human affairs, the belief in the life of the world, with or without us, is enough.
The Divine Comedy (1320) is a narrative poem by Dante Alighieri. Begun in 1308 while Dante was exiled from his native Florence, The Divine Comedyーa long poem divided into three books of 33 cantos eachーpresents the author’s spiritual journey from sinfulness and despair to salvation and self-understanding. Written in the Tuscan vernacular, the poem was influential in establishing a standardized Italian language.

In the first book, Inferno, Dante is led by the Roman poet Virgil into Hell. There, he comes to terms with his own sinfulness while observing the horrors and tortures suffered by those condemned to eternity in its circles. Along the way, Dante encounters historical figures, acquaintances, and other individuals whose violence, fraud, treachery, and betrayal led their spirits to terrible suffering. This technique, which incorporates dialogue with detailed description, is used throughout The Divine Comedy to provide context on historical, theological, and political subjects while simultaneously situating the poet as narrator and interlocutor in his own work. In this way, the physical and spiritual journey portrayed in the poem becomes a journey for Dante himself, a way of transcending the despair he describes at its beginning. In Purgatorio, Dante follows Virgil on an ascent of the Mountain of Purgatory, where he encounters the souls of sinners who must atone for their actions in life before entering Heaven. Leaving Virgil behind, Dante, in Paradiso, follows a divine Beatrice through the celestial spheres of Heaven. As he approaches God and his own salvation, changed by a newfound sense of “the Love which moves the sun and the other stars,” Dante ascends to the heights of world literature, uniting the created soul and the artist’s creation as no other poet has done before or since.

This edition of Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy is a classic of Italian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
First performed in 1908, How the Vote Was Won is a one act play by actress Cicely Hamilton and Christopher St. John. Set in England during the early 18th century, How the Vote Was Won uses comedy to tell a story in support of women’s suffrage. In this one act the English government tells its people that women do not need to worry about having the right to vote because the men will be in charge of taking care of them. This was part of the ridiculous idea held by the United Kingdom, and the world at the time. Women were held under the authority of their husbands, and would be solely supported by them. This allowed them no place in politics and took away their autonomy. The play stars Horace, an anti-suffragist, who is confronted by many of his female relatives demanding that he start supporting them since they have no rights. Many of these women formally held jobs, financially supporting themselves but have quit in protest and support of the movement for women to have voting rights, the same as men. Now, Horace is forced to either support each of these women, practicing what he preaches, or admit to his hypocritical beliefs. Written by two of the most notable champions in literature for women’s rights in the United Kingdom, How the Vote Was Won by Cecily Hamilton and Christopher St. John served as a clever and humorous way to address the inequalities women suffered. Today, the work of these two passionate activists still provides an accurate portrayal of the political landscape they lived in. This edition of How the Vote Was Won by Cecily Hamilton and Christopher St. John features an eye-catching new cover design and is presented in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition is accessible and appealing to contemporary audiences, restoring How the Vote Was Won to modern standards while preserving the clever comedy and impact of the work of Cecily Hamilton and Christopher St. John.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Separated into two parts, Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine the Great follows the conquests of an outlaw who slowly rises to power through extreme displays of aggression. When Mycetes, the king of Persia, complains to his brother, Cosroe, about a group of outlaws that were causing trouble, Cosroe claimed that Mycetes was weak, and that a king shouldn’t have such a problem. In response, Mycetes sends out a powerful soldier to kill the leader of the outlaws, Tamburlaine. Though the soldier’s army was twice the size of Tamburlaine’s, the outlaw was hardly discouraged. Using his wit and charm, Tamburlaine attempts to convince the soldier to convert to his side, merging the two armies. As Tamburlaine grows stronger, he gains new allies, such as his clever wife, Zenocrate. Though he seemed to be just a petty outlaw at first, the leaders of prominent Eurasian countries become increasingly concerned as Tamburlaine slowly overcomes armies and nations with force, manipulation, and unlikely alliances. As his makeshift armies continue to challenge elite armed forces, countless lives are at stake as Tamburlaine’s bloody ambition only grows.

When first released, Tamburlaine the Great both fascinated and disgusted the 16th century audience. Gaining a mix of fame and infamy, Tamburlaine the Great is praised for its masterful imagery and language, enchanting audiences with its drama. However, Marlowe still received criticism for the play’s suspected atheist undertones and the violence associated with the play, both real and depicted. With strong themes of humanism, Tamburlaine the Great celebrates the accomplishments of Tamburlaine with little regard to the character’s cruelty and aggression, creating a thought-provoking narrative that stays with readers long after the play’s conclusion. Often referenced in prominent literary works, Tamburlaine the Great remains relevant with radio and film adaptations, and is still performed in theatres around the world.

This edition of Tamburlaine the Great by Christopher Marlowe is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover decision, creating an accessible reading experience. With these accommodations, Tamburlaine the Great is restored to modern standards while the original genius and vivid imagery of Marlowe’s poetry is preserved.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The Private Secretary (1883) is a three-act comedy by English actor and playwright Charles Hawtrey. Adapted from a popular German farce, The Private Secretary helped launch Hawtrey’s career as one of Victorian England’s leading theatrical figures. Initially panned by critics and audiences, The Private Secretary was revised and shortened by Hawtrey, who then restaged the play to resounding praise. Revived countless times throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, The Private Secretary is a comic masterpiece that set the stage for such playwrights as Oscar Wilde. Harry Marsland and Douglas Cattermole are two young friends who find themselves deeply in debt. Ever unwilling to take responsibility, they look to Robert Spalding, a clergyman as honest as he is innocent, for a way out. While Spalding is employed as a secretary for the Marsland family, Douglas…borrows…his identity in order to seek forgiveness from his creditors. Meanwhile, Douglas’ uncle returns from India and mistakes the unwitting clergyman for his nephew and precedes to berate him for his newfound silence and passivity. When a suspicious creditor uncovers their poorly concealed plan, the two friends must bribe him with a chance to stay at Harry’s family estate, which only further risks the chance of Spalding getting to the bottom of his own strange situation. The Private Secretary is a comedy of manners that dissects English aristocratic life in order to expose its capacity for vanity, greed, and exploitation.
When Jesus was baptized, Heaven announced that he was the son of God. After the joyous celebration, Jesus went back to his mother’s house to hear the story of his miraculous birth, which inspired Jesus to go on a journey to become even closer to God. Trusting his God and strong in his love for him, Jesus set out for a forty-day trip into the desert with no food, as he planned to fast in order to eliminate distractions. Meanwhile, Satan overheard the declaration that Jesus was the son of God. After meeting with his followers, Satan decides that he will corrupt Jesus just as he corrupted Adam and Eve. Excited to hurt God once again, Satan accompanies Jesus to the desert. As Satan disguises himself and attempts to tempt Jesus with food, power, and vanity, he tries to appeal to the vehement nature of human hunger.
The wedding day of Henry of Navarre, a Protestant from a noble family, and Margaret of Valois, the sister of the Catholic king, has arrived, though there are few aside from the bride and groom that are happy about it. Set during a time of political and social unrest in 16th century Paris, the Catholics and the Protestants, also known as Huguenots, hold grudges and extreme distrust against each other. When it becomes apparent that the mother of the bride, Queen Catherine, intends harm to Henry, The Duke of Guise, the leader of the Huguenots, is determined to strike first. With a plan to poison Queen Catherine and to shoot one of her admirals, The Duke of Guise orders his men to attack discretely before the family of the bride can do the same. However, when their first murder attempts are not entirely successful, the Catholics seek retribution. Now caught in a violent chain, the feud started at the wedding escalates into a war of espionage and assassinations.

With themes of social, political, and religious change, Christopher Marlowe began writing The Massacre at Paris during the height of the animosity between Protestants and Catholics. Based on an actual historical event, Marlowe depicts the war between the religions with beautiful and hyperbolic language. First debuted in 1593, the same year as Marlowe’s untimely death, The Massacre at Paris is among the legendary playwright’s final works. Rarely found in print, The Massacre at Paris is one of Marlowe’s lesser known works, though it is just as masterful as the rest of his canon. With high stakes and a compelling plot, The Massacre at Paris is a fast-paced and exciting drama that allows modern readers an intimate and authentic perspective on a historical event.

This edition of The Massacre at Paris by Christopher Marlowe is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover decision, creating an accessible reading experience.
The Waste Land (1922) is a poem by T.S. Eliot. After suffering a nervous breakdown, Eliot took a leave of absence from his job at a London bank to stay with his wife Vivienne at the coastal town of Margate. He worked on the poem during these months before showing an early draft to Ezra Pound, who helped edit the poem toward publication. The Waste Land, dedicated to Pound, includes hundreds of quotations of and allusions to such figures as Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Ovid, Dante, Saint Augustine, Chaucer, Baudelaire, and Whitman, to name only a few.

Divided into five sectionsー“The Burial of the Dead;” “A Game of Chess;” “The Fire Sermon;” “Death by Water;” and “What the Thunder Said”ーThe Waste Land is a complex poem that translates Eliot’s fragile emotional state and increasing dissatisfaction with married life into an apocalyptic vision of postwar England. The poem begins with a meditation on despair before moving to a polyphonic narration by figures on the theme. The third section focuses on death and denial through the lens of eastern and western religions, using Saint Augustine as a prominent figure. Eliot then moves from a brief lyric poem to an apocalyptic conclusion, declaring: “He who was living is now dead / We who were living are now dying / With a little patience.” Both personal and universal, global in scope and intensely insular, The Waste Land changed the course of literary history, inspiring countless poets and establishing Eliot’s reputation as one of the foremost artists of his generation.

This edition of T.S.
Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) is a collection of poems by T.S. Eliot. Published following the successful appearance of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” in the June 1915 issue of Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, Prufrock and Other Observations established Eliot’s reputation as a leading English poet and pioneering literary Modernist.

Opening with “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” the collection begins with an invocation of Dante, whom Eliot saw as an important innovator of a polyphonic, referential poetry capable of interrogating and dramatizing the construction and representation of the self. The poem is written from the perspective of a repressed, despairing middle-aged man who meditates on his relationships with women and the regrets he has accumulated with age. In “Preludes,” a poem of urban malaise, Eliot “thinks of all the hands / That are raising dingy shades / In a thousand furnished rooms,” and reaches for an understanding of the world as “some infinitely gentle / Infinitely suffering thing.” Other poems include “Morning at the Window,” another brief vision of city life, “The Boston Evening Transcript,” a satirical reverie on time and community, and “Cousin Nancy,” a humorous lyric celebrating Miss Nancy Ellicott, who unabashedly “smoked, / And danced all the modern dances. Both personal and universal, global in scope and intensely insular, Eliot’s poetry changed the course of literary history, inspiring countless poets and establishing his reputation as one of the foremost artists of his generation.

This edition of T.S.
Women Are People! (1917) is a collection of poems by Alice Duer Miller. Inspired by her work as an activist for women’s suffrage, Miller published many of these poems individually in the New York Tribune before compiling them into this larger work. Focusing on the opposition of politicians and citizens alike, Miller makes a compelling and frequently hilarious case for the extension of voting rights to women across the nation. With her keen eye for hypocrisy and even keener ear for the rhythms of the English language, Alice Miller Duer crafts a poetry both personal and political. In “Liberty,” she lampoons the hypocrisy of men who praise the goddess of Liberty while denying women access to basic human rights: “O Liberty, how many men there are / Who do you honour in a flowing phrase, / In martial measures and in patriot lays, / Invoking you as a goddess and as star/ […] / But when you first approach them, when you turn / On their pale eyes your eyes’ unwavering light, / […] / They fly before you, crying in their fright: / ‘Arrest this wild-eyed jade! Police! Police!’” In these lighthearted lines, Miller satirizes the exclusion of women from American democracy. Succinctly and convincingly, with humor and with lyric grace, Miller makes her case for suffrage and the rights of women very clear. As she expresses in her ironic title, women are indeed peopleーdespite the lengths to which they must repeatedly go to prove it. This edition of Alice Duer Miller’s Women Are People! is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
The New Life (1294) is a work of verse and prose by Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Composed in the prosimetrum style, The New Life explores the popular medieval theme of courtly love. Made up of alternating commentaries, sonnets, and canzoni, the work is an essential expression of Dante’s poetic gift, and a foundational work for the dolce stil novo literary movement to which Dante was a central figure. Written in the Tuscan vernacular, the poem was influential in establishing a standardized Italian language.

Compiled and published following the death of Beatrice Portinari, whom Dante loved from the age of nine when he saw her on the streets of Florence, The New Life translates his personal grief into a moving and universally recognizable work on the nature of love. Dante, who believed that romantic love could lead to a development of the soul, subsequently bringing one to the love of Godーa concept central to The Divine Comedyーdivided his work into prose commentaries and poems in verse, a popular style known as prosimetrum. Despite this debt to tradition, however, Dante wrote The New Life in the Tuscan vernacular as opposed to Latin, making his work more accessible to readers. Autobiographical in nature, The New Life portrays Dante coming to terms with his grief, praising the deceased Beatrice, and turning friends and acquaintances into figures populating his poems. From sorrow to salvation, Dante finds the light of God through the darkness of death, testifying to the transformative power of love while proving beyond any doubt the power of a transformative poetry.

This edition of Dante Alighieri’s The New Life is a classic of Italian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Fifty Years and Other Poems (1917) is a collection of poems by James Weldon Johnson. Although less popular than his book God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse (1927), Johnson’s second poetry collection showcases his talents as a rising star of African American literature. Including some poems that would be featured in The Book of American Negro Poetry (1922), an influential anthology compiled and edited by the poet himself, Fifty Years and Other Poems remains essential to Johnson’s legacy as a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance. “Fifty Years” opens the collection with an ode to emancipation, a starting point from which millions of men, women, and children were given the opportunity, however fragile it was, to pursue better lives. Rather than give thanks for freedom granted, however, Johnson implores his fellow Black Americans to remain proud, assured that liberty is their hard-earned right: “This land is ours by right of birth, / This land is ours by right of toil; / We helped to turn its virgin earth, / Our sweat is in its fruitful soil.” Hopeful and resilient, Johnson reflects on his own place in this history of struggle, paying particular heed to his status as a poet, his ability to sing despite centuries of violent oppression. In his poem “O Black and Unknown Bards,” he asks “O black and unknown bards of long ago, / How came your lips to touch the sacred fire?” Recognizing the need for a reconciliation between the long tradition of black culture and the overwhelming erasure of his own contemporary artists, Johnson highlights the efforts of those poets such as himself, who “Within [their] dark-kept soul[s], burst into song.” >This edition of James Weldon Johnson’s Fifty Years and Other Poems is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
Beginning shortly after Satan was banished to Hell, Lucifer, the fallen angel, delivers a persuasive speech to organize his followers after they were defeated by God’s army. As he attempts to rejuvenate the enthusiasm of his demons, Satan discovers his insatiable need for revenge. Empowered by his follower’s support, Satan realizes that the best way to achieve his desire is through the corruption of God’s most treasured creationーhumankind. Determined to undermine God one more time, Satan journeys to Earth, where he finds Adam and Eve living in the Garden of Eden. Described as paradise on Earth, the Garden of Eden provides everything Eve and Adam need. The couple live harmoniously, and enjoy a healthy emotional and sexual relationship. However, when Satan arrives and persuades them otherwise, life isn’t just changed for them, but for all of humankind. However, Adam and Eve do not realize their mistake right away, as their life seems as pleasant as ever and are able to appease their every desire. But when God confronts them for what they’d done, Adam and Eve become desperate for forgiveness, and Satan relishes in the success of his plan.

Following the Christian origin myth of man, Paradise Lost by John Milton is an immense epic poem written in blank verse and separated into ten sections. Regarded as a superior work of English literature, Paradise Lost is an exquisite classic.

This edition of Paradise Lost by John Milton is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover design.
