There are tightness and an alkaline cast to the finish - which is virtually dry - that need to give way eventually to something more endearing if this is to become compelling. The oily rich palate features tactile impinged by brown spices, chalk, peat, and graphite; and I am only a bit disappointed by the extent to which sweetness dominates the finish. But this will be worth holding for 15 or more years and in the process the balance should improve. Deiss didn¡Çt even bother to harvest a 2006 from this deeply-soiled site, he explained, ¡Èbecause it¡Çs like a sponge, and warm to boot,¡É thus ideally designed to exacerbate the vintage¡Çs challenges.(The Wine Advocate, Apr 27, 2010)

Rich, sweet, fresh and elegant, with fine tannins and a lingering salinity, this is a gorgeously balanced and stimulating Altenberg that reveals a nice purity, mineral freshness and stimulating (tannin) grip.
