The history of Peebles spans nine centuries, so it is inevitable that there is a wealth of history in which to delve for nuggets of interest. David I of Scotland used to visit Peebles Castle in the late 1100s to hunt, the parish church of St Andrew was founded in 1195, and the town was made into a royal burgh by David II in 1367. The River Tweed did not have a bridge at Peebles until 1467, just a few years after burgh records were started during the reign of James II. In the sixteenth century, the town was surrounded by a wall with defensive bastel houses, remains of which can still be seen. The social history changed dramatically with the arrival of the railways in the nineteenth century as woollen mills took advantage of both the fast flow of the river and easy transportation of goods; the trains also brought flocks of tourists to the picturesque setting, establishing Peebles as a holiday location. Traces of the town’s fascinating history are visible to the enquiring eye and local author Liz Hanson endeavours to uncover some of the secrets of Peebles.

Using an historical perspective to enrich the journey, Wales: A Walk Through Time describes a unique walk through a remarkable country. Illustrated with a fascinating collection of old photographs and contemporary images, the route has been specially chosen to explore the beauty and history of Wales. The walk will eventually reach Anglesey, but in this second of three parts we are treated to the glorious landscapes and proud heritage of central Wales. The journey begins in the historic town of Brecon where Giraldus Cambrensis, who famously travelled through Wales in the twelfth century, was once the Archdeacon. The route joins the delightful Wye Valley Walk to pass through Builth Wells and Rhayader in the heart of Wales before leaving the Wye to follow a bridleway to Llanidloes. Here, Glyndwr's Way National Trail is joined, passing through the Cambrian hills to reach Machynlleth, Owain Glyndwr's ancient capital. We enter the Snowdonia National Park, visiting the beautiful lake of Tal-y-llyn and climbing Cadair Idris before descending into Dolgellau. The Mawddach Estuary Trail takes us to the seaside at Barmouth and finally we follow a section of the Ardudwy Way to reach Harlech with its great castle. Along the way, we enjoy wonderful scenery and recall momentous events and great figures of Welsh history including Prince Llywelyn, Owain Glyndwr and Henry Tudor. The reader is given a real sense of how the past is present at every step. Each chapter covers an attractive section of the walk, full-colour maps show the way, and a number of welcoming hostelries are discovered en route. But this is not only a guide for walkers; the rich history and images within will have the broadest appeal.

This book takes a photographic tour of one of the City of Westminster's more distinctive areas, and with a wealth of archive images set alongside comparison photographs from the present day shows how old neighbourhoods have evolved through the decades. Along the way are the carefully preserved Victorian streets of Pimlico's early development and some of the grittier byways which have yielded to war damage and great modern housing estates. The pages are filled with pubs and local traders together with canal and Thames side industry. The local transportation is represented by images of vintage buses and antiquated trams alongside the great transport interchanges which characterise northern Pimlico. Pimlico Through Time offers a fresh look at a much loved London area and will delight and intrigue local residents and visitors alike.

Haywards Heath is a remarkable place with an intriguing history. Misguidedly characterised as 'large and quite amorphous', detailed inspection actually reveals a dynamic settlement that spread like a patchwork quilt in a distinctive pattern of development. It was indisputably the railway, a Victorian marvel cut through bare heathland in 1841 and bringing with it the county asylum and one of the country's largest cattle markets, which was the making of Haywards Heath. There is far more to the district than that, however. The town's standing buildings and the local place names hint in places at much earlier history: a deadly battle of the Civil War in 1642, two thriving medieval manors, and even travellers and traders on a Roman road. This collection of evocative old and new images vividly illustrates these events as well as the intricacies of generations of everyday life in Haywards Heath.

Macclesfield is an ancient Cheshire town that stands beneath the sprawling and beautiful Peak District. It is Cheshire's furthest outpost before taking the road into Derbyshire and many years ago entered the Industrial Revolution in a more genteel manner perhaps, by becoming a silk town. Here all manner of silk items were manufactured such as the narrowest ribbons and the best of silks and satins. It is the perfect place to explore Macclesfield Forest and the Cheshire Peak District but the town itself has plenty to offer including the Heritage Centre with its museums and tea room. Paul Hurley has carefully selected modern and old views to paint a nostalgic historical portrait, so enjoy this pictorial tour of the town and see what is here now and compare it to what was here many years ago.

The Local Government Reorganisation Plan of 1971 brought together the nine townships of Ashton under Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale, Mossley and Stalybridge and, from 1 April 1974, the towns came together under the nomenclature of Tameside. We have attempted to illustrate through old photographs and their modern counterparts a glimpse of these very individual townships. The Kings Head in Droylesden will be forever associated with Guardsman Neil 'Tony' Downes, son of licensees Ronnie and Sheryl. Twenty-year-old Tony was killed in Afghanistan in June 2007. His funeral at St Mary's Church, with full military honours, was on the 28 June, the very day he had been due home on leave. Tony wrote letters home and his words were set to music by chart act, 'The Soldiers'. Entitled Letters Home it was released in 2010.

The Berkshire town of Windsor has a rich royal history and you’ll find no better illustration of this than in its many and varied old hostelries. People have been enjoying the hospitality offered by the town’s watering holes since William the Conqueror first built a castle here in the eleventh century. Today, that reputation continues as a lively mix of locals and tourists look to quench their thirst. From bustling alehouses that maintain a live music scene through to traditional taverns offering a more sedate atmosphere redolent of a seemingly bygone age, this book will guide you through the town’s pub landscape.

Victorian Sunderland developed a unique form of housing to accommodate its hardworking population. Resembling a terraced bungalow, the distinctive ‘Sunderland cottage’ became the town’s dominant housing type during the nineteenth century. Early examples were built for Sunderland’s many shipyard workers and opened the door to home ownership for skilled artisans and their families. Well loved by local residents, these unique homes are now recognised as an important and distinctive approach to housing Britain’s urban population. Even today, Sunderland cottages represent the backbone of working-class communities across the city. This book examines the development of the Sunderland cottage, tracing the evolution of the form and its place within the town’s social and architectural history. The research draws upon an extensive collection of building plans, which reveal for the first time that these modest homes were in fact designed by leading Sunderland architects and share their provenance with the finest buildings in the city. The text is illustrated with photographs taken especially for this volume, along with building plans and archival images. The Sunderland Cottage: A History of Wearside’s ‘Little Palaces’ will serve as a valuable guide for Sunderland residents eager to know more about their own homes, and anyone with an interest in Britain’s nineteenth and early twentieth century housing.

During the eighteenth century the city of Bath experienced a period of dramatic expansion, when an extensive range of elegant uniform streets, landscaped spaces, tall stone-built Georgian houses, and public buildings made their appearance. There was no master plan for the development of Bath. The city just expanded piecemeal with various developers taking advantage of the city's growing popularity as a spa and resort. Nevertheless, such was the extent and success of these developments that today Bath ranks as a masterpiece of urban creative design, both at national and international level. Georgian Bath offers an overview of the development of the Georgian city, its beginnings, its emergence, the eighteenth-century social conditions in the city that underpinned its success, and the significance of its architectural legacy. In addition, the individuals who were responsible for the creation of Georgian Bath are introduced, together with an outline of the economic and stylistic forces that drove and inspired them. The book is supported by photographs, illustrations and maps. In addition, three suggested walking tours are offered.

Could it be that a ghostly woman carrying a baby is destined to repeatedly throw herself into the Ribble at West Bradford? Why are so many of Lancashire's theatres and stately homes plagued by multiple apparitions and phantoms? And what to make of the frequent reports of spectral black dogs, prowling feline animals, yeti-like creatures and even vampires that occur in this county? From folkloric headless boggarts to modern ghostly encounters and the UFO 'hotspots' of Winter Hill and Rossendale, Daniel Codd has unearthed hundreds of strange tales to capture the imagination and, sometimes, chill the blood. Researched and compiled from archive sources, although up-to-date and including many contemporary first-hand accounts and contributions from county folk, Paranormal Lancashire is a celebration of all things inexplicable in this part of the northwest. Designed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the odd and unnerving Pendle Witches saga, it reminds us that even after four centuries, old beliefs in the supernatural and paranormal die hard.

This book illustrates some of the changes in the villages of Newby and Scalby situated on the northern outskirts of Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast. It includes many of the older streets and some of the buildings as well as scenes of village life from a bygone age before the advent of motorised transport. These contrast sharply, in many cases, with the recent photographs that have been taken to highlight the way the character of villages has altered. The villages were served by a station at Scalby, on the Scarborough & Whitby Railway, that was opened in 1885. This stimulated the growth of Scalby, when building materials were brought in to construct new houses. This was an important stage of development in a process which still continues today. Despite this progress Scalby still retains its historic heart and this book also illustrates some of the features that have survived.

An ancient Celtic settlement, Wigan stands on the River Douglas with its face to the Pennine foothills, 8 miles south-west of Bolton and 20 miles from the South Lancashire coast. Described in 1698 as 'a pretty market town built of stone and brick', Wigan was radically transformed by the first and second industrial revolutions and, for a century or more, cotton was king. While it is well-known for its pies, its mint balls, its cup-winning rugby and soccer teams, its icons of music, stage and screen, and its thick jam butties, Wigan is even more famous for its semi-mythical pier. But after 2,000 years of constant change, there is much more of interest and even of timeless, sylvan beauty in this old town and its surrounding villages.

The mass migration of folk from the countryside to Bradford at the height of the Industrial Revolution resulted in large numbers of people existing in abject poverty, as thousands were housed in filthy and overcrowded rooms and cellar dwellings. For many, an escape from these conditions was a few hours in the public house, where alcohol and trouble flowed freely. The proverbial 'demon drink' was to fuel much of Victorian crime in the borough, including the most heinous of all - murder. Murder by Gaslight in Victorian Bradford is a fascinating insight into how demoralising and harsh life was for those living and working in this industrial boom town during a period of rapid growth (1857 - 97). Contemporary newspaper accounts were incredibly detailed and graphic in their content. Embark on a trip back in crime to see the lives of people who have quite literally slipped into obscurity. For the most part, their only memorial was an overgrown and unmarked grave, until now.

This book is a study of waterways infrastructure and investigates through images and maps how the present midland network of canal and river navigations was put together. It is a complex history where some working waterways are approaching 250 years of existence, but where others span the distance of time with construction and modification extending right up to the present day. In some instances their existence has been sound and with other cases fragile. Many might have disappeared by now, were it not for a unique set of circumstances and a British passion for the past. English and Welsh Canals and River Navigations, in 2012, face one of the most of the most important challenges since 1948 when waterways owned and maintained by British Waterways pass into the control of the Canal and River Trust. The present situation is further complicated by the fact that not all navigations in England and Wales were nationalised. A portion of the railway owned canals had also been abandoned and some independent canals had closed before that time and were not considered in the nationalisation package. Others, such as the Derby Canal, lingered on in private ownership until complete abandonment occurred.

The London suburb of Highgate is still noted for its beautiful eighteenth- and nineteenth century architecture, its real village atmosphere, its old pubs and pretty residential areas. The nearby Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Waterlow Park make this a green and pleasant place to live, work or visit in the capital, with fantastic views across the city. However, as late as 1900, Highgate was a village at the edge of London and, until 1876, the site of a toll gate, hence the village's name. It is famous for Highgate School, founded in 1565, and for its tenuous connections with the highwayman Dick Turpin. Coleridge spent his last years in Highgate recovering from his opium addiction, and the village is also home to Highgate Cemetery, the final resting place of figures ranging from Karl Marx, Christina Rossetti and Douglas Adams to a brother of Abraham Lincoln's assassin! Join Michael Hammerson in exploring the past life of this historic village and some of its colourful residents through old photographs, many of which are previously unpublished.

The appearance of the town has changed dramatically during the last forty years and it is difficult in many instances to appreciate how it appeared to our forefathers. Many of the old public houses have gone from the town and some of the out of town drinking establishments have gone or have been re-invented as restaurants. The railway station is like any other in any town; as are the red brick-like streets. Change is metered to us as progress, some will disagree but the upside is that many examples of the substandard housing have been swept away. Nostalgia is a recreation many of us revel in. Robert King attempts to capture Neath as it was and as it is now together with old characters hidden in sepia photographs. Hopefully this book will preserve their memory for another generation to enjoy them.

Lowestoft, on the Sunrise Coast, is as far east as you can be in the United Kingdom without getting your feet wet. Once a major fishing port, the town was reinvented by Samuel Morton Peto in the nineteenth century as a resort to rival Brighton. Suffering from the decline of these industries, Lowestoft now seeks to become the onshore centre for the renewable energies industry. Michael Rouse's photographs chart some of these changes, from the loss of the old fishing industry to the town's need to cater for modern holidaymakers with car parks and enhancement schemes along the beautiful South Beach. He travels outside Lowestoft to the once sea-threatened villages of Pakefield and Kessingland, to the crumbling cliffs of Corton and its holiday villages, and finally to the colourful Oulton Broad.

Wallasey: The Postcard Collection takes the reader on a journey through this fascinating and varied part of Britain. Situated on the northern tip of the Wirral Peninsula, Wallasey has primarily evolved from a collection of isolated villages into the sizeable town of 60,000 people we see today. The exception to this organic growth is New Brighton, a purpose-built town within a town, created by James Atherton from 1830 onwards. This far-sighted project became one of the most elegant seaside resorts of the Regency period, even taking its name from its pre-eminent rival on the south coast. The book is separated into six parts. We start with Liscard, the centre of town, with its shops and historic park, the former grounds of Sir John Tobin's stately pile. We progress to New Brighton and Wallasey Village, with its tales of smugglers and customs men, the fairground and bracing sea air, the lighthouse and the forts. Finally, we take in Poulton and Seacombe with its docklands, distantly remembered railway stations and its famous ferry, before completing our tour in Egremont with its cinemas and many fine churches.

The railway at Ipswich dates from 1846 and that at Felixstowe from May 1877. Due to the busy port of Felixstowe the line is still doing extensive business in both passenger and freight traffic today. Like all branch lines the local stations have all lost their goods facilities, but recent investment in the branch has seen new signalling and a loop extension at Derby Road enabling two full-size freightliner trains to pass. In this book we take a journey over the line from Ipswich to Felixstowe stopping at all the stations to view what has changed over the last hundred years. Unusually for today this branch line retains its passenger service, although some stations have closed, such as Orwell, Felixstowe Beach and Pier. But with healthy passenger and freight revenues the branch has a secure future.

The communities that feature in this book lie to the east of Edinburgh and all have fallen prey over the years to its inevitable expansion. Portobello accepted merger with Edinburgh in 1896 when this proudly independent burgh was not only Scotland's premier seaside resort but also boasted a strong local economy based on its thriving pottery, brick and glass manufacturing works. All of these underpinned a wide range of retail and commercial enterprises. Suburban sprawl spread to the west of Portobello in the 1930s when a mix of local authority and private housing was built over the fields of Restalrig, Lochend and Craigentinny. This book chronicles the early changes and also those caused by industrial collapse and urban development from the second half of the twentieth century. Inevitably, some of these changes have produced scars on the landscape but there are many positive images of regeneration.

Hawick is a town of great beauty within the Scottish Borders. The undulating terrain has given up its secrets over the centuries, revealing a cluster of ancient hill forts and Roman connections. The medieval village was founded in the twelfth century by Anglo-Norman settlers, although it was often overshadowed by its near neighbours, the great Border Abbey towns. A royal charter made Hawick a Burgh of Barony in 1511, while the period of lawlessness when the Border Reivers flourished saw stone fortifications built to protect the surrounding land and its people. Hawick’s cultural epoch can arguably be traced back to 1514, when the settlement’s young men, or ‘callants’, were called to arms to defeat a marauding band of English raiders. The Battle of Hornshole is today celebrated through the annual Hawick Common Riding, which, combined with the ancient tradition of ‘riding the marches’, adds to the town’s unique and rich heritage. The size and shape of Hawick did not change radically until the Industrial Revolution, when the town experienced a boom period of growth and innovation. It is during this period that the earliest photographs of Hawick appeared. For a place of its size, Hawick has been home to an extraordinary wealth of talented photographers. Up to the current digital age, the ‘grey auld toon’ has been the subject of many fine snapshots ? each capturing a unique moment in local history. This book aims to provide an insight into the past, by uncovering history through old photographs.
