Whitehaven and the Borough of Copeland have seen many changes over the centuries, but the pace of their transformation has been breathtaking over the past decade. Whitehaven's one-time commercial harbour, tied to the needs of local industry, has been wonderfully restored, and now boasts a new sea-lock and marina dedicated to the needs of the leisure industry. Gone are the coal and iron ore mines, the iron- and steel-making industries and the great chemical works. Of the large employers, only the nuclear facility at Sellafield and the West Cumberland Hospital remain. These changes have pushed the people of West Cumbria toward alternative professions, largely within the tourist trade. This should not be surprising, as about a third of the district lies within the Lake District National Park, the home of England's highest mountains and deepest lake. Whitehaven's nearest lake, Ennerdale, is the subject of an imaginative scheme 'Wild Ennerdale', which will allow all future development within the valley to occur in a sustainable way. Apart from the lakes, mountains, castles, villages, rivers and museums, there are over 40 miles of coastline, including some fine sandy beaches and high, precipitous cliffs. Whitehaven and District Through Time is the perfect introduction and guide to this beautiful land.

Bury St Edmunds is a proud and traditional medieval market town that has managed to preserve its identity in the face of post-war modernisation, and today attracts thousands of visitors who enjoy its unique charms. St John’s Street was saved by concerned residents in 1971 and is still full of distinctive independent shops today. However, it hasn’t all been good news: the demise of the cattle market and associated flea market was a major blow to the town and an ultra-modern development, The Arc, now stands there instead; the town has lost every greengrocer and almost every butcher and baker, while over forty pubs have closed and with them the traditional games and sports that we participated in before the advent of the modern technological age. Lost Bury St Edmunds is a fully illustrated book that sheds light on the town’s past and will appeal to both visitors and residents who have the fondest of memories of what was once there.

Helensburgh’s history begins on the 11 January 1776 when Sir James Colquhoun of Luss, on the shore of Loch Lomond, advertised land to be divided into building plots on the south-facing slope overlooking the Clyde. The town, called after Lady Helen Colquhoun, received a royal charter in 1802 and developed rapidly on a planned grid pattern during the nineteenth century. Henry Bell’s Comet, the first seagoing steam ship in the world, started a commuter service to Glasgow in 1812, making the town, with its fine views over the sea, an attractive place to live. By Edwardian times, a large number of fine houses, some designed by important architects, had been built up the hill, culminating in The Hill House, Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece. Between the wars and in the ’50s and ’60s, Helensburgh was a very popular resort for day trips ‘doon the watter’ from Glasgow, and though this has now declined, the proximity to the Loch Lomond National Park and sailing on the Clyde means it is still a major holiday destination. The town is close to the adjacent naval base at Faslane and combines maritime traditions with fine streets filled with clouds of cherry blossom in spring.

As one of the earliest recorded towns in Britain, St Albans has had a long, colourful and distinguished history. Dominated by the great Abbey Church of St Alban, the adjacent site was a thriving market town in Saxon, Norman, medieval and Georgian times. The coming of the railway in the mid nineteenth century saw increased development to the east of the original settlement, and this has been steadily growing ever since. St Albans was one of the sites where Magna Carta was drafted. It played a great part in the Peasants' Revolt, and took Parliament's side in the Civil War. Each of these periods has left its mark on the architecture and environment. Today St Albans is still a thriving market town, a focus for commuters and a magnet for tourists. All this and more is captured in this remarkable book, celebrating the vibrant life of this most historic area.

Old photographs allow us to relive the past and the lives of the people in it, and through 162 superbly preserved images Gateshead From Old Photographs provides a spectacular insight to the lives of those who lived in this popular north-east town. Gateshead has had a rich history and throughout the twentieth century it has experienced huge changes. Major slum-clearance programmes resulted in wholescale demolition of some areas and a renovation of the entire landscape as many streets and buildings were lost to locals. Through beautifully maintained archive photographs this book allows a nostalgic look back at a period that is gone but not forgotten and is a fitting tribute to the memories of time gone by. Gateshead Local History Society celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 2014. Over the years the members have carried out various research projects and in 2012 they produced their first book, Gateshead’s Grand Houses. This is their second.

In recent years a number of Norfolk’s mills have been restored ? sometimes to full working order ? by private owners, councils and windmill trusts. The county has among the most extensive windmill remains in Britain and was once home to some of the largest ever built. There is much interest locally and nationally in the preservation of these symbols of a bygone age. In Windmills of Norfolk, John Ling brings together some of the most important and interesting examples, including many which still survive and others that have disappeared. Within its pages are recorded the often forgotten record-breaking giants of the past together with a host of present-day survivors that can be visited or viewed.

Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, started out as a bridging point and market town. Steeped in history, the town was an important Saxon burgh by 900, boasting two licensed mints. Its importance was reinforced when William de Warenne, a key ally of William the Conqueror, built his castles here. First a temporary building on Brack Mount, known as Bray Castle, and second the impressive stone and flint building erected nearby, so giving Lewes, perhaps uniquely, two mottes and one castle. Lewes Castle still dominates and is well worth a visit. Intercepted by the River Ouse, there are a number of gorgeous countryside walks to take advantage of in this charming ancient town. The Postcard Collection beautifully illustrates the culture and character of Lewes, taking us on a journey through its historical past.

The 1950s proved to be a period of great change in South Shields, when residents were beginning to put their lives back together after the Second World War. New housing estates and factories were built, bringing increased prosperity to the area. The decade also brought rock ‘n’ roll and late nights out on the town, allowing young people to experience the new nightclubs opening up in the area. Now a time of nostalgia, it was a period when people began looking forwards to the future, not back at the horrors of war, to kick up their heels and have fun. In South Shields in the 1950s, local author Eileen Burnett explores this significant period in the area’s history and brings it to life. The book contains evocative images that will transport the reader back to these joyful, progressive years.

In the 1920s and '30s the corner shop was not just a place to buy groceries. It was a place to meet familiar faces and help people out. People bought groceries on a daily basis and going to the corner shop provided many people with a daily routine. Yet finding the finances for groceries could be a struggle and, when times were hard, many people would have to obtain their groceries 'on tick'. For some this was a way of life and shopkeepers had to keep a careful balance between credit control and offending customers. Hazel grew up in her father's shop and this collection of stories recalls her memories of those times. Some tales are sad but some are truly hilarious. A charming collection of stories that remember the people, the goods they sold in the shop and a way of life that has now vanished.

The majority of South Yorkshire's twenty-first century residents are oblivious to the unique and fascinating Sand House that graced Doncaster from the mid-1850s until the Second World War. It was created by excavating the ground from around a massive block of sandstone and then hollowing out rooms within, in order to create a 40-metre-long, 12-metre-wide residence equipped with all the mod cons that a wealthy Victorian businessman would want. And yet there is nothing to be seen now of this incredible Sand House. The two authors show how the idea for the Sand House arose from its creators' combined business interests of property development and sand extraction. From its modest beginnings as a two-up-two-down dwelling, it grew to become a ten-roomed mansion, complete with stable and ballroom. Not only dances but other major social events took place in the house and its 'sunken garden'; guests were allowed to explore the property's extensive tunnels and admire the abundance of carvings hewn from the sandstone within. The Sand House's sad demise in the mid-twentieth century means that this marvellous creation is no longer available for visitors to admire, but its story lives on through the pages of this book.

The East End of London has always been looked down on by those who live in the rest of the capital. Jack London's People Of the Abyss is just one of the many books written about the poverty, crime and suffering that has blighted the East End throughout the past. As what is now the East End spread out towards Essex, however, the picture has become very different. Many areas such as Bethnal Green, West Ham and Forest Gate were once small rural villages. Not only has the East End been a centre of poverty but it has also been where many of the worst disasters to occur in London have happened. Among the streets of small terraced houses, however, there are often areas of surprising beauty with parks that have survived from the middle ages and houses that were once lived in by a more affluent population. The East End has always been a contrast of rich and poor, mansion and slum, throughout history.

The history of the Medway Towns is synonymous with the large-scale military industrial complex that was centred on the dockyard, military barracks and various fortifications. This has, over many years, provided employment for the people of Chatham and Gillingham as well as Rainham, Rochester and Strood, along with the service industries that were part of the military-industrial complex. But the Medway Towns also had an abundance of cement and brickworks, barge makers, breweries, engineering workshops and clothing manufacturers. Among the household names were Short Brothers of Rochester, manufacturers of seaplanes and RAF bombers, while Strood was home to Aveling & Porter, whose iconic traction engines still grace steam fairs across the country. Despite this heavy industrialisation, the present-day Medway Towns, where houses and parks now stand, were also an area rich in farmland, with the former village of Luton as important for hop picking as anywhere in the county of Kent. In a fascinating series of contemporary photographs and illustrations, combined with a well-researched commentary, this book explores the life of these five Kent towns, the nature of local employment and the impact it had upon those employed to reflect the daily life of the Medway Towns at work.

From as early as 1864, Llandudno, in North Wales, was known as ‘The Queen of the Welsh Resorts’ and today it continues to attract millions of visitors every year. Holidaymakers are drawn here by its glorious setting, framed by the Great Orme and Little Orme headlands, and attractions including two beaches, a Grade II listed pier and its proximity to Snowdonia and the World Heritage town of Conway. The postcard first appeared in the nineteenth century and became very important to the holiday trade of the town. Millions of cards were sold, which were, in effect, worldwide advertising for the resort. One of Llandudno’s interesting people was G. R. Thompson, who had a newsagent’s business and became the biggest commissioner and publisher of postcards. He crowned himself ‘The Postcard King’ and his cards all featured his image on the reverse. In Llandudno: The Postcard Collection, local author John Lawson-Reay draws on an extensive collection of postcards to provide a colourful chronicle of Llandudno’s history. As well as chapters devoted to the promenade and parades, the beach and boats, the Great Orme and the pier, the author also focuses on the town centre and significant buildings, together with the outlying areas. For residents and holidaymakers alike, this is a fascinating and evocative portrait of a favourite seaside resort in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The picturesque market town of Montrose, located on the windswept coast of Angus between Dundee and Aberdeen, offers all the charm of a seaside resort alongside a range of impressive buildings. Over the centuries, affluent landowners, wealthy merchants and rugged sea captains have come and gone from Montrose, and the early success of such townspeople is evident in the striking architecture. It has frequently been said that Montrose is a place of high antiquity, and that it witnessed many stirring and historic events. With such a rich history, the town has a fascinating story to tell. A good way to tell this tale is through picture postcards, which show how life once was and the changes that have taken place. During the early years of the twentieth century, the sending of postcards became almost a national obsession, and today these provide a wonderful record of the buildings, streets and people of times gone by. Montrose: The Postcard Collection captures the coastal town of Montrose, as well as neighbouring villages Ferryden and Hillside, in all their former glory through a selection of old postcards from the author's own collection, many of them in colour.

The origins of the name Knutsford have been disputed by historians but there is an ancient and popular explanation. After one of his victories, King Canute crossed the brook known as Birken and the village became known as 'Canute's ford' later to be changed to Knutsford. The Domesday Book gives some credence to this by calling it 'Cunetesford' (Canute's Ford). Canute was the king of England from 1016 to 1035 and his name in Old Norse was Knutr. Over the years Knutsford became popular and affluent with the many wealthy families who settled in the vicinity. In the late 1800s Richard Harding Watt arrived with his money and love of Italian architecture, and used his wealth to build the Gaskell Memorial tower in memory of the town's famous author Elizabeth Gaskell and the Kings Coffee House next to it. So take a stroll through the streets of this Cheshire gem, and see how it has changed.

With its extensive beaches, breathtaking limestone cliff s and thriving local industries, South Shields has been a hub of activity since the time of the Romans. Founded in 1245, South Shields quickly developed into an important fishing port, with industries such as fishing and salt-panning attracting workers from all over. In the nineteenth century, coal mining, alkaline production and glassmaking led to a boom, and South Shields' population increased from 12,000 in 1801 to 75,000 by the 1860s. Despite suffering extensive damage during both World Wars, the resilience and determination of South Shields' 'Sand Dancers' has seen the town retain its bustling energy and unique character, which continues to attract visitors today.
'We never needed to lock our doors in the past ...our door was always open, even if we were out ...you could walk the streets safely in those days ...Nobody bothered you.' This is what Laurie Curry's grandmother used to say when she was comparing her times to modern times. But how true was it? Laurie started to research into these good old days by trawling through the archives of the local history section of the Central Library in South Shields. He also looked through back copies of the Shields Gazette. He was looking for the ordinary Shields person, not the rich and famous, and what he found confirmed his thoughts. It was not all good old days, there were quite a lot of bad old days too. His research drew his curiosity to the criminal element in the town's past and here are the results of his research.
