This illustrated history portrays one of England’s finest counties. It provides a nostalgic look at Worcestershire’s past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites. The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England’s archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts. In the heart of England, Worcestershire is a largely rural county centred on the historic city of Worcester with its medieval cathedral. The north of the county reaches into the more industrialised West Midlands, with much of the rest of the county devoted to agricultural produce. Natural features include the rivers Severn and Avon, the Malvern Hills and the edge of the Cotswolds and Bredon Hill. Many of the major towns including Redditch, Bromsgrove, Droitwich, Evesham, Malvern and Stourport have preserved their historic character, and some reveal the important role that local industries have played in the history of Worcestershire, such as carpet weaving in Kidderminster and needle making in Redditch.

The Four Heatons have grown into popular residential suburbs over the years, each with its own identity. The area plays host to a range of good local shops, cafe bars, restaurants, traditional pubs and an independent cinema. Its architecture, parks, open spaces, and leafy, tree-lined streets tell the story of the rise of Victorian and Edwardian affluence, which built the foundations of the vibrant and busy community we know today. High on a ridge, with panoramic views to the Peak District, Cheshire Plain and the Pennines, the Heatons presented an attractive and healthy place to live for wealthy families in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Much of the Heatons is now protected by conservation areas. Join the authors on a unique journey around the Heatons, and learn more about the area's fascinating history and development through time.

The Stour Valley line dates from 1849 and has had a long and turbulent history. Extended in 1865, the line reached the zenith of its fortunes under Great Eastern Railway. Thereafter, changes of ownership and cost-cutting programmes saw many services withdrawn and sections of the line closed. This, the first of two books exploring the history of the Stour Valley Railway, covers the line from Marks Tey to Bury St Edmunds and Cavendish. Stour Valley Railway Through Time takes the reader on a tour of the line, past and present, showing through old and contemporary photographs the history of the stations on the line over the last fortyfour years: the remnants of the route north of Sudbury, the surviving branch at Marks Tey, and a look at the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel & Wakes Colne.

Both the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme and its name almost certainly owe their existence to the building of a 'new' castle there in the mid-twelfth century. The town's importance gradually grew from the twelfth to the eighteenth century by which time Newcastle was the place to go for markets, fairs, doctors, banks and lawyers and it has been referred to elsewhere as the 'Capital of North Staffordshire' during that period.Throughout the last century, 'progress' has wrought huge changes on the town and sadly today Newcastle contains relatively few buildings of note in comparison with what remained standing at the beginning of the 1960s. The authors hope that this volume may help to encourage the preservation of what is left of the old town. They also hope that it may stimulate new students to enjoy researching and recording the town's history.

The remnants of slate mining and quarrying form as much a part of the Lakeland historic landscape as the stone walls, heathered moorlands and Lakeland farms do. A significant number of local families currently living in Lake District villages has had some connections with the slate industry in the past, and a few are still involved in the industry today. Although many believe that slate was worked during the Roman era, the present ‘style’ of slate-working started shortly after the Norman Conquest to help build the Norman castles, abbeys and priories in Britain. The Normans were familiar with slate; it had been worked for centuries earlier at sites in the Ardennes and in the Loire valley. By 1280 there are references to slate being worked at Longsleddale and by the fifteenth century the industry was well established throughout the district. Using historic detail, photographs and captions, Slate Mining in the Lake District: An Illustrated History explores the history of the industry in the Lake District. Considering slate mining’s key role in the heritage of this iconic national park, Alastair Cameron also details its present-day operations.

The Weald of Kent is a famously beautiful part of England and there are some extremely attractive villages between it and the North Downs. Charing was an important staging point where archbishops, kings and travellers broke their journeys to and from London. The sleepy village of Westwell is north of the A20, which now runs into the outskirts of Ashford where we find the Hare and Hounds at Potters Corner. Nearby, the wonderful gardens of Godinton Park still welcome visitors today. Hothfield, with its wild common, has altered the most over the last century while the village of Little Chart shows the impact of the Industrial Revolution. The picturesque village of Pluckley's many old buildings give credence to its reputation as the most haunted village in England. At the heart of the Weald, Smarden seems almost untouched by the passing of more than 300 years.
Margate was one of the first English seaside resorts. From the 1730s it set out to attract visitors, particularly from London, who came by coach and sailing ship to take advantage of the fine sandy beaches and healthy air. Fashionable squares and terraces overlooking the sea were built to house the visitors and much of this Georgian and Victorian heritage remains, and is illustrated in this book. The book starts with a pictorial description of Old Margate, based on a walk described in The Steam Boat Companion published in 1834. The two following chapters describe the expansion of the town westward to Westbrook and eastward to Cliftonville. The pairs of old and new pictures show a town with a long history making a new future for itself.

Runswick Bay has been inhabited since before Roman times, as burial mounds found on the moors behind the village suggest. This delightful hideaway, with its steep track down into the bay, is a picture postcard example of the East Coast delights, its sheltered anchorage offering an ideal spot for fishermen, whalers and smugglers. However it has suffered the ravages of time and weather. In 1682 a landslide destroyed the entire settlement with the exception of one cottage. Fortunately no-one was hurt because two mourners attending a wake realised what was happening and evacuated the village. A new community was built on the cliff side but its precarious position made it vulnerable to the forces of nature. The completion of the sea wall in 1970 has hopefully secured the future of Runswick once and for all.

The name Walthamstow derives from the Anglo-Saxon 'Wilcumestouue', meaning 'the welcome place'. Once noted for fine views, woodlands and wealthy estates, Walthamstow changed dramatically with the coming of the railways. With the opening of the Lea Bridge station in 1840, the borough developed into an important centre for commercial industry and a vital link for London's transport system. Most people today would associate Walthamstow with William Morris, the High Street, the pop band East 17, and its famous greyhound stadium, known as 'the Stow'. Less well known is the town's rich transport heritage, being the home of Britain's first motor car and the home of London's buses. Author Lindsay Collier hopes to awaken memories for longstanding residents, and to inspire newcomers to learn more about this historic town.

Ruislip is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The short description 'Rislepe' reveals a heavily wooded and thinly populated area with land for twenty ploughs. An unusual feature of the landscape was 'a park for woodland animals', the northern pale of which survives as Park Wood, a scheduled ancient monument. As many of the people mentioned in the survey would have been heads of families, the population was probably between 200 and 250. The area of the manor of Ruislip in 1086 is likely to have been the same as in later times, being bounded on the north by the boundary between the counties of Middlesex and Hertfordshire, and by the parishes of Northolt to the south, Harrow on the east, and Harefield and Ickenham on the west. Local historian Eileen Bowlt charts the history of this picturesque town, explaining its development and growth through a selection of fantastic photographs.

This is the second volume in a unique and exciting series on the history of York. York in the 1960s provides an account of York life during a definitive decade. Ten years in which the city emerged from the greyness of the largely derelict 1950s into a technicolour world of personal freedom and growing disposable incomes, allowing some to spend that money on newly available labour-saving devices, televisions, cars and holidays. Crucial to York in the 1960s was the ground-breaking Esher Report and the long-overdue University of York. Esher shaped today’s city; the university’s contribution to the city’s social, cultural, educational and scientific fabric was, and remains, inestimable. York in the 1960s will please and satisfy curiosity whether you grew up here then, whether you have left and want to rekindle your childhood and teenage memories, or whether you are a child of the twenty-first century curious to know what was going on in that exuberant decade.

The village of King's Norton began to evolve in the medieval period and is continuing to grow and change while retaining its earlier landscape of a village surrounding a green. The creation of a cemetery at Longdales Road, and a development at Parsons Hill, have produced evidence of Roman activity possibly in conjunction with the transportation of salt from Droitwich Spa to Metchley Fort along Icknield Street. The canals are now used for leisure and may become a substitute for road transport for a wider heritage trail. Much of King's Norton was transferred from Worcestershire to Warwickshire in 1911 as part of the Greater Birmingham Extension Act. The inevitable encroachment onto Greenfield land was forecast by the visionary George Cadbury and a visit to King's Norton still means a visit to the Worcestershire countryside, but for how much longer?

There are many fine buildings of architectural interest to be seen in Greenock. These include the Municipal Buildings, Custom House, Sheriff Court, Watt Monument Library, mansions of the West End and a large number of impressive churches.
Madeley parish is situated in the north-west corner of Staffordshire. It is set in an attractive landscape of hills and meadows. The present appearance of the parish is both revealing and deceptive in terms of its historical past. The medieval church and its surroundings, the Old Hall and Madeley Pool all suggest a parish that has developed over many centuries and is typical of rural Staffordshire. Based on the presence of coal and iron and helped by a network of railways, nineteenth century Madeley saw substantial changes. By the middle of the twentieth century there was little of that industrial activity left. Its hub, the coal mine, closed and the village of Leycett virtually disappeared. This book goes on a visual journey through the parish and attempts to illustrate both continuity and change.

Having been granted city status during the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, Stirling is Scotland's smallest city, with an enthralling wealth of architectural heritage and history that would be the envy of much larger places in the country. Stirling’s heritage dates from the thirteenth century, when it was granted a royal charter and became a significant medieval settlement. Its strategic importance as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ also made it the much fought over ‘Cockpit of Scotland’ and it has witnessed many of the most significant battles in Scottish history. In this book, author Jack Gillon takes the reader on a tour of fifty of the city’s finest buildings and structures, celebrating its immense architectural heritage and ancient character. Stirling’s military prominence is reflected by its imposing castle, which has served as both a fortress and royal residence over the centuries - Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned there in 1543. The author also highlights the city’s places of worship including the Church of the Holy Rude and the ruined twelfth-century Cambuskenneth Abbey. Other treasures include The Atheneum, dating from the early nineteenth century; the Stirling Smith Art Gallery; and the city’s many historic houses; while past and present combine at the Battle of Bannockburn Centre. Also featured are the memorials and monuments to notable figures such as Robert the Bruce and Sir William Wallace. Stirling in 50 Buildings provides a fascinating exploration of this charming historic city that will appeal to residents and visitors alike.

Using a historical perspective, Wales: A Walk Through Time describes a unique walk through a remarkable country. Illustrated with a fascinating collection of old photographs and contemporary images, the route has been specially chosen to explore the sheer beauty and diversity of Wales. It will eventually reach Anglesey, but in this first of three parts we are treated to the glorious landscapes and proud industrial heritage of South Wales. Beginning with a boat trip to the interesting offshore island of Flat Holm, where Lighthouse Point marks the most southerly spot in Wales the walk resumes on the mainland at East Aberthaw and follows the southern coast to Barry and Cardiff Bay, heading through the city to Caerphilly and the valleys. It goes through the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and Abergavenny, then along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and through the Brecon Beacons National Park. We encounter characters such as Marconi, Captain Scott, Roald Dahl, Tommy Cooper and some of the heroes of Rorke's Drift. Historical events are recalled, giving the reader a real sense of how the past is present at every step. And we cross the paths of earlier travellers, such as Giraldus Cambrensis and George Borrow, who had their own take on some of the places we visit. Each chapter covers a day's walking, full-colour maps show the way, and a number of tempting hostelries are discovered en route. Not just a guide for walkers, it will also appeal to historians and indeed all who love Wales.

Matlock is located on the River Derwent in a fairly central position in Derbyshire. At Matlock, the Derwent carves its way through hard limestone rock, creating Matlock Dale, one of Derbyshire's most spectacular dales, with crossing points of the river at each end of the dale, at Matlock and at Cromford. Matlock Bridge lies on an ancient route formerly used for the transport of locally mined lead eastwards to Nottingham and beyond.Matlock developed rapidly following the arrival of the railway in 1849, giving it a legacy of fine ninteenth century buildings. Matlock Bath developed as a popular inland resort from the eighteenth century, set in the beautiful scenery of Matlock Dale. At the southern end of the dale, Richard Arkwright constructed Masson Mill in 1783 and this site is now the start of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site (designated in 2001).
